Voice Enabled Search on Samsung TV

2018-09-01

I worked on a very enjoyable project for Samsung Research America, to build out the Samsung TV voice search feature. Samsung had recently acquired Viv, an AI company who provided a set of tools to enable developers to implement natural language queries from which keywords could be extracted and turned into API parameters. I integrated Samsung's featureful media search API able to search by genre, date, actor and more to create a seamless integration between a user saying something like Show me Tom Cruise's scifi movies into a valid search and present results to the user.

I worked with several teams both in and outside the US, to accomplish the end result and had to deliver the feature before we received any mockups or design specification. I spent time researching the capabilities of the NLP integration, the Search API and feeding back to the teams developing those features to deliver the best voice search possible.

In the following demo, the head of SRA and the presenter are barely scratching the surface of what the search is capable of.
